Whenever I'm asked the question "how's business?" and respond "good", I'm amazed when some people reply "wow. you're lucky" My response to them is "Yes. I am lucky to be able to do something I love and make money doing it". Some people attribute success and failure with luck. Many Red Sox fans believed in bad luck until their team finally won the World Series, in 2007. The curse was lifted.
Luck has very little to do with whether you sink or swim, in business or life. Hard work and determination have much more to do with it. Having a clear vision of what you want to achieve then doing whatever it takes to make it happen, will make it easier to succeed.
Can you get lucky? Sure. Sometimes, being at the right place at the right time, can help but you have to be somewhere first. Any action is a positive action. Opportunity isn't always going to knock on your door. You have to go and make things happen.
I used to argue, with another carpet cleaner, about luck. He always used to say that I was lucky and that he was cursed. He always claimed that it wasn't in the cards for him to succeed. We both did the same quality work but I was more active in the community and attended more chamber and other networking events. I was more visible and present. I told him, "The Harder I work, the luckier I get"
Many people don't want to take ownership of their own destiny. Some people are always looking to point a finger or find someone to blame. You make your own breaks in life. You don't succeed or fail because of someone else. Others like to make excuses.
Not everything you do is going to succeed but if you keep doing more things, something is eventually going to stick. When something fails, learn from it and move forward. When something works, do more of it.
Go out and create your own luck. It's within you. You just have to dig deep and make it happen!

Comment by Leslie Flowers on November 5, 2012 at 1:51pm Enjoyed this Fred. There is no such thing as luck. Period. There are no coincidences. Period. WE may THINK there are because we are simply unaware of how our universe operates -- by Law. That's like saying gravity doesn't work because we are unfamiliar or unaware of it! Yet I doubt anyone would jump off a 10 story building to 'prove' it.
