Whether we like health care reform or not its here and we should all know what that means to us.
The "essential health benefits" are one of the components that have been mandated to be included in all major medical health insurance programs as of January, 2014.
What are they?
1.Ambulatory patient services
2.Emergency services
3.Hospitalization
4.Maternity and newborn care
5.Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment
6.Prescription drugs
7.Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
8.Laboratory services
9.Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management, and
10.Pediatric services, including oral and vision care
How might this impact you? For some, it means that in 2014 your health insurance program will have more benefits than it did previously, unless you have a grandfathered plan ( purchased prior to March of 2010). It also might mean an increase in your insurance premium. These additional benefits are not free. Click here to read my article on the impact on health insurance premiums.
Is this good or bad? Depends on your perspective. Obviously some think its good or it wouldn't be a new law. For those that are counting their pennies when paying their health insurance premium each month may not think so.
