This post has been on my "blog about list" for too long, so here it is! :)

We often hear the expression "get your head out of your butt", but I want to talk about getting the "buts" out of your head!

We all have them. I call them "yeah, buts"...

I hear it all the time

  • Yeah, but the economy...
  • Yeah, but I can't...
  • Yeah, but I don't have the money...
  • Yeah, but [so and so] won't support me...
  • Yeah, but that is how I was raised...

This is what I tell myself when I catch myself doing this.

Replace the word "but" with "and". A simple change, but a HUGE shift!

How do you get the buts out of your head?

I do that ... use the word AND quite intentionally as 'but' seems to negate what I've said before it, and also the word YET works well! Great post Heather! [neat picture!]

thanks Leslie! Yes, it was funny...I was getting ready to write the post and someone posted that pic on FB! Funny how "signs" show up isn't it?

They show up indeed when we need and 'recognize them!' This is a simple practice you mention, when done in spaced repetitive intervals with intention, will actually shift your results by shifting your beliefs. It's so easy and yet, why don't people do these things? Therein lies the great secret between those who live in abundance and those that hang on to a mindset of lack.

Great post, Heather. I hear the same thing from clients: "I need to delete some of these, but I might need them someday." "I'd give it away but it was a gift." I use the "and" strategy to help move people from their stuckness: "I'd like to give this away and because Aunt Sue has such a giving heart, I'm sure she'll understand why I want someone else have it."

Great point Leslie! More often than not the word is NOT used in an empowering way! ;)

Janice, good for you! I will add [as my dear friend says] "bless someone else with it - NOW!" :)

Thanks Julie! Yes, people are more than happy to project their own self limiting beliefs aren't they? Good for you for not caving in to the 'masses' :)
