Welcome back! Here's Part 6 in my series counting down from rough ideas to published book...and beyond. This is one of the last posts in this series, as the book's launch is imminent!
One of the best ways I've found to promote my business and raise awareness about my services is to hold events. In my experience, events have been much easier to market than my company's services, simply because events give people something to do and provide participants with valuable information (often at little to no cost to them!) Events have worked so well for business in general that I've decided to set up a series of events to get the word out about the book. At this point in the countdown, the
Summer of Creativity is being born!
Why set up a series of events to promote a book?
1.
Events get people interested in what you're doing. Someone may pass by a book on the shelf, but be totally excited about a free creativity workshop!
2.
You can design different events to attract different people. There are many people out there who may enjoy your book, but they'll like it for different reasons. By setting up a variety of events and designing them to appeal to different kinds of people, you increase the audience for your book. And in this case, setting up fun and creative events puts the message of my book into action!
3.
It's news! A new book is big news, but a new book AND a Summer of Creativity blanketing the area with playful, creative events? That's bigger and more interesting news--and you can use it to create a bigger and more interesting buzz.
Here's how I'm building my Summer of Creativity
1.
Going back in time. I'm thinking back to every place I've ever lived, and setting up an event there, writing press releases about it, and telling old friends from that town.
2.
Working with our public library. This week, my big project is to talk to the Wake County Library people about setting up book signings, creativity workshops, or both. Please feel free to heckle me next week and ask me if I got this done. :)
3.
Planning lots of different events. So far, I've planned speeches, classes, book signings,
a huge picnic with drums and hot dogs, and an offering of my
creativity workshop for women for the summer. These events will have very different atmospheres and goals, and will attract different kinds of people.
4.
Using Inside919 to partner and communicate with other businesspeople. I used the Inside919 forums to create an "I'm Looking for..." discussion to
get other businesspeople involved in the Summer of Creativity. I've also used Inside919 to get the word out about my
Book Release Picnic and
Women Embracing Creativity Course.
Events are great, too, because whether my book sells or not, having the event gives me good teaching experience, allows everyone in attendance to meet new friends, and carries an empowering message about creativity into the community. If you're around during the summer, please feel free to drop by a Summer of Creativity event, and enjoy some creative fun!
Next time, we talk Giftees. And then we'll wrap this series up. :)
