The basics of how to effectively and efficiently run a business are the same, they haven’t really changed over the years. What has changed is our economy, the environment, more competition and more marketing coming at us from all directions just to name a few.
Sometimes business owners, especially solopreneurs, tend to get bogged down with the daily, mundane administrative tasks that need to be done, but don’t actually bring in the money. Part of sustaining a business is continuous improvement: more clients, more cash and more confidence!
Let me provide you with the 6 key areas of “work" anyone can engage in, in developing business:
1. Purpose and Values
Know your WHY! If you were asked, "Why are you willing to go broke for your business," what would be your answer? I've asked this questions many times to my clients and some of them immediately say that they aren't willing to go broke for their business. Oftentimes these are the people that have more fear and less confidence in their ability to move forward in a big way.
Know your core values! Your core values are deeply rooted and control your emotional reaction to situations. Have you ever felt stuck, constrained, like nothing was going your way? More than likely, this is the result of your core values being dishonored. Think of a time in your life when you were happy, fulfilled and full of joy? What core values were being honored?
2. Strategies and BHAG
What is your Big Hairy Audacious Goal? Have you thought about it, written it down? If so, will it stretch and challenge you? Is it something that you’ve never achieved before? Do you have a big enough WHY to go after it and does it honor your core values?
What strategies will you put into place in order to work toward achieving your BHAG? Have you thought about those and written them down so that you can measure, reflect and tweak?
3. Success Model
Simply put – know your Who, What, Where, When, Why and How
4. Execute the Plan
Once you’ve decided on your BHAG, strategies and success model, write down the necessary steps you’ll take to reach that goal. This will allow you to SEE what success looks like. It will also free up storage space in your brain so that you will continue to be creative and inspired to think of even more innovative ideas! Be sure to prioritize and sequence your plan – and plan for obstacles, necessary resources and people you might need in order to reach your BHAG.
5. Monitor Performance and Results
What kind of system do you have in place to TRACK your income producing activities? A simple Excel spreadsheet can do the trick! Know what you’re tracking. Set goals and create strategies that give you the ability to track and measure. This practice will allow you to identify strengths, weakness, threats and opportunities so that you can tweak every 30, 60 or 90 days.
6. Continuous Improvement
We are always learning because there is always new information that we can use and apply within our business. Take the time to invest in yourself, in your business and THINK. You deserve it and so do your clients. How can you continue to UPLEVEL your service to others? Follow the 80/20 rule – 80% of our success and/or failure is a result of internal factors while only 20% is a result of external factors.
Keep the Momentum Alive,
