A question I’m often asked, in both hoarder’s and non-hoarder’s homes is, “Where do I start?” My answers vary but if you are totally overwhelmed and craving a done-in-a-day project, the pantry is the perfect place to begin because it’s not too large, the contents are easily put into categories and the keep-or-toss decisions are determined by an expiration date rather than sentimental reasons. The pantry is also one of the quickest ways to get your family organized, save money, time, and shelf sp…

This is pretty rudimentary when it comes to energy savings, but there are still a lot of people who are not aren't doing this!
Incandescent bulbs convert 90% of their energy to heat and only 10% to light, so they are good heaters but poor light generators. CFLs not only use less energy, but they last longer, too: A 14-wa…

This may seem like a simple item, but many people forget about it! Check around your windows and doors and see if they are leaking, or if you can see daylight. If so, install weather stripping to seal this up! There are various types, and each one has it use. Ask someone at your local hardware store which one works for your situation or you can research your options online. Also, while door socks can help, many people will remove them in the summer. Just because you are not uncomfortable in the…

As winter approaches, here are some easy things you can do to make your home more efficient:
- Let the sunlight in to warm your home. Raise your blinds and open curtains during the day to let the sun heat your home. Remember to close them at night to help keep heat in.
- Lower your thermostat setting by one degree. This is one of the easiest ways to reduce your power bill and can save you 3% on your heating bill in just 24 hours.
- Install a programmable thermostat to automatically lower the…

Many people still do not have a programmable thermostat in their homes, and some who do still aren't using them to their full potential! According to the EPA, a programmable thermostat can save you $150 a year. Based on current prices, if you can install the thermostat yourself, this provides a 6-month paybac…

This is a very common question among homeowners. Concerns for fungal growth or mold often arise when an unfamiliar odor is noticed or a small leak occurs, and at that time one starts to investigate how to prevent the growth from occurring! I am often asked if there is a special treatment or construction pro…

For this fundraiser? It is really for a great cause and I would also appreciate if anyone would like to plan this with me? Here are the details:
Back in 2004, I decided to create something FUN and different to raise funds for my niece Madison who has a very rare case of Multiple Sclerosis. I created "The Recipe Exchange Fundraiser" which I raised $250 by just having a great time with my friends and eating.
What I Need Help With is using this same experience and Raising Funds for my friend Chri…

While I am thankful for all the rain we have gotten in the past few days in Raleigh, with that came flash flooding and trouble on the coast. I have to admit that while I lived in Los Angeles I was ill prepared for an earthquake. I know it was my way of saying this won’t happen to me. I lucked out and never lived there during a major earthquake, but Katrina taught me to quit being passive.
Be sure to keep important documents, contact numbers, and other vital information in a place where it can a…

If you are like me, and many of my clients, paper has to be constantly checked or you could be surrounded by it before you know it. Some people have a fear if they throw away the source they will also lose the knowledge. I have yet to not find what I need on the internet.
Here is a great site that has manuals. Instead of having to keep those bulky manuals, you should be able to locate even hard to find ones here:

Mold is a very common concern when dealing with indoor air quality. Many homeowners will believe that an odor or the reason they are feeling sick is due to mold without ever seeing the growth. The truth of the matter is that I find mold in only about 30% of the "unknown odor" cases I investigate! Often, t…

For centuries, honey has been used in cooking and for medicinal purposes. As a natural humectant, it draws and retains moisture. As an antioxidant it's gentle to sensitive skin, making honey an ideal component of any beauty regimen. Add to that the fact that it costs pennies compared to high end beauty treatments and you'll find no matter what you use it for, you can't go wrong with honey.
Step 1
Mix a pinch of finely ground almonds into a tabl…

I was forced to figure this out quickly when I encountered a skeptic at a friend’s social event. I was having a conversation with several people and one lady mentioned that she was in network marketing. I was excited and I told her how much fun I was having in this industry. We were discussing the many challenges and the wonderful learning experiences.
The gentleman who was with us, mentioned that I was nothing but a sales rep with no vacation or benefits. I smiled at him as I was trying to com…

Home sales are down in many areas. When this happens, how do you market?
Some agents have tried gimmicks like giving away a big screen TV or even a car with every sale. In general, however, such things don't work well in a slow market.
Here are a few things that agents have found work for them.
1. Exposure of homes through the Internet, especially by providing virtual tours. Nearly 80 percent of home buyers reported using the Internet during their home search. Statistics also show that listin…

When getting organized you don’t have to go out and buy a bunch of new gadgets. Many times you will be able to reuse what you already have.
I started my business full time a few months ago. Until then I really didn’t have a need for a “real” office chair. Until my back started hurting when I blogged from my rocking chair.
The wonderful photographer Elizabeth Galecke, also founder of the equally wonderful Chix in Business, told me about the state surplus store here in Raleigh. They sell chairs,…

I just met a lovely lady in the parking lot reading the signage on my car. She proceeded to ask me if I was an Interior Designer. "Yes, I am" I replied. And she begins her story. "I need to update my house and I am overwhelmed." One of the many reasons she needs an interior designer! And, obviously aware that she needs the help!
Interior Design is about beauty and comfort. Not about indecision and stress. I do not feel that "putting it all together" should be stressful. I like to make the proce…
