Are you really who you seem to be?

Are you making your accomplishments look bigger than they are?

Are you worried that others may think you haven't accomplished enough, so your own pleasure at meeting a goal isn't as strong as it could be?

Do you streeeetch the truth so others think you've accomplished more than you have, or more than you are confident to report?

I saw a great message from a nationally-known author. He speaks around the country, commands very high fees,…

Why should I care? I already have your money.

Leslie Flowers' great post on Taking it To The Source led me to post this.

You have two options when you receive sub par service or defective merchandise. You can go to management to make it right, or say nothing and pay anyway.

I got tired of saying nothing and paying anyway. It didn't resolve things to satisfaction, it left me irritated all the time, and it…

Revolutionize the ordinary.

President Obama couldn't have got it more right last night.

Many people will be posting the as-per-usual RIP statements on their Facebook et al today regarding the loss of Steve Jobs. But Obama really noted something with his remarks:

"The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented." - President Obama

Be it the iPhone, iPad,…

If you've got vegetable oil, you're not that stuck.

Certain death

I came outside to see this on my driveway:

You aren't getting out of this one, little skinks.

See the sign? It catches snakes. Those tiny little paws that are a hair wide, your thin…

More tips on "Being the Message"

Steve Hand just posted a great blog on writing for publications. I will add from my past experiences working with trade publications as a marketing director:

1 - read several past issues of the publication in question. Editors do not like pitches that make it clear you have barely browsed through.

2 -…

5 basic, fast ways to regain your sanity with a suddenly full workload

Today is a day that started out innocently enough. A few emails, a cup of coffee. Then it happened.

Somehow, word got out that I was alive and on the computer. Emails, Facebook messages, tweets…

"A+++ would buy from again"

Look familiar?

It's the feedback system for eBay. When a transaction is completed, both buyer and seller 'leave feedback' for each other to indicate to other buyers and sellers if the transaction was worth going through again, or if it was a huge PITA to be avoided.

Regardless of the rating, feedback is expected. In fact, it's considered very bad form to NOT leave feedback for each other after a transaction on eBay has ended.

Why do we not leave as much feedback as… Read More

leave a voicemail!

LEAVE A VOICEMAIL!

I've got a guy who called several times for a Who's Who directory, and finally the person in question emailed him the contact information to be included in the directory. Simple enough...right?

He has called twice a day for the last month, leaving just one message with me that he was "following up to confirm the accuracy of the info."

I'm sorry...if we emailed it to you, you have it.

That's a lot of followup calls to… Read More

Senate Has a Heart! Can a 1099 Repeal be upon the Horizon?

It seems the Senate and our elected officials have heard the cry of millions of Americans who have begged for a repeal on the 1099 filing requirements by revising the Small Business Jobs Act Tax relief and lending bill by scaling back requirements.

If you've been tracking my blogs or Michelle Gower's post over the summer you know that I quite a sour taste for Congress and the Senate on many proposed bills that appear to bring about tax relief and create new jobs only to be full of… Read More

In support of the tech: fixing problems with policy vs. skill - updated

I have to say, I understand why people are always yelling at technical support. It's a stressful experience at best most of the time, no matter how experienced you already are, because you have to deal with what the person on the other line (the tech person) is telling you, and so often, what they are telling you seems to go against the laws of logic on my worst day. With all the runaround, multiple transfers, and more time spent upselling on other services than… Read More

1099s no longer just for contractors starting 2012

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- An all-but-overlooked provision of the health reform law is threatening to swamp U.S. businesses with a flood of new tax paperwork.

Section 9006 of the health care bill -- just a few lines buried in the 2,409-page document -- mandates that beginning in 2012 all companies will have to issue 1099 tax forms not just to contract workers but to any individual or corporation from which they buy more than $600 in…

Just who do you think you are, anyway?!?!?

A lot of discussion about egos, perspective, and service over the last few days among my circle of friends and I'm sure others. It inspired these thoughts, I would love to hear yours!

No matter how much we follow guidelines, rules, best practices, we're all human.

We react. We feel. We make…

What I learned about business from a side ponytail, bright blue eyeshadow, and roller skates.

I pulled my hair as tightly as I could to the side before securing it with a rubber band and debated making bear claw bangs. Man, did I know how to work a teasing comb. God help anyone sitting behind me at the movie theatre.

Nah, keep it simple, I decided. Besides, bear claws weren't in until '86 and I was clearly going for '84.

I pulled my oversized t-shirt over my bright pink spandex leotard, making sure my mismatched bra strap… Read More

Freedom of Speech

*soapbox alert*

I don't follow sports a whole lot, but I've heard of Kay Yow, especially recently. I have also heard of, and support, the Free Expression Tunnel at NC State. I heard today of a party(ies) who spray painted over the mural of Ms. Yow, her face in particular, with statements like, "Cancer Rules."

Did this person have the right to spray such statements? If that's what the tunnel is for, then yes IMHO.

But was it necessary? Did it advance…

Even on paper, you can still find ways to shine.

It's not always easy to talk about yourself, let alone describe yourself, in a social profile. Sometimes it can be downright intimidating.

Here are some tips and tricks to help you put your best foot forward here on 919--your profile.

ABOUT ME

This is where we talk about our favorite subject: ourselves! You don't have to write a novel here. But this is the spot to give us that snapshot--are you a sports nut? Married with children? A new transplant to the area?…

This holiday season, let us remember...

Black Friday and thus the holiday season is upon us (if you don't count the decorations and commercials that came out before Halloween).

Considering that retailers would like us to basically bypass being thankful altogether and get to the shopping, I'd like to say a few words before the melee ensues. Some will read this and shout Amen! and others will read this and shout Go jump in a lake! Regardless--this is my prayer:

As we all hit the sheets at 7 p.m. to get some…

Return to Sender...again...and again...and again...

Low-cal jolts of inspiration, and easy to swallow, too!

This morning I sat down to my inbox to find a new piece of spam. From the preview pane I could tell it was a legitimate business but one that more than likely purchased an email list, because there was no reason in the world why a work address like mine needed to be receiving a newsletter from a retail quilting shop in New Jersey.

I immediately looked up the service provider for this mass mailout,…

So...the "Chief Executive Officer" is not a fan of titles, eh?

Recently I made a comment to a friend after seeing her email signature wherein her job title was changed for the umpteenth time.

"Okay, now you're a "legislative specialist?" I asked. "You've had four titles this year. What is the deal?"

"The CEO doesn't believe in titles," she responded. "I've had three supervisors this year and they all changed my titles when my responsibilities were also changed (read: dumped on her by laid-off employees). But when the new CEO…
