Analysis Paralysis Hampers Organizing Efforts

Frank Williams, of Pioneer Strategies, once wrote a blog entry that struck a cord with me. Here is an excerpt:

The managing partner of a company with which I was employed a number of years ago said this to one of the people who worked for him. "...quit getting ready to get ready ..."

In a nutshell, he was telling this person that, while planning was important, at some…

How To Get a Raise at Work

Would you like to make more money? Would you like to get a raise at work this year? Here is the solution.

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a…

Testimonials

I’m a very strong believer in the value and power of testimonials. On one hand, the world is full of salespeople who promise to do a good job for their customers. What’s usually lacking is the evidence to support that promise, and that’s what a testimonial letter or comment can provide for you.

I made a commitment to myself very early in my career, that anytime somebody told me that they liked doing business with me, or that I had done good work for them, I would ask them to put…

How’m I doing?

Feedback is the breakfast of champions.” ~~ Ken Blanchard

The winds of change are always blowing. Most business owners are too busy delivering products and services to take much notice. Ignore it long enough, though, and you won’t know what hit you until it is too late.

It is essential to develop a system that solicits and deals with feedback on a regular basis. There are five main reasons that most small business owners… Read More

The 3 R's for Safe Prescription Use

October is "Talk About Prescriptions Month". In honor of that, here are some things to consider according to the National Council on Patient Information and Education:

Risk - All medicines have risks in addition to their benefits. Carefully look at the risks when considering its usage.

Respect - Respect the power of prescriptions and the value they provide when properly used. The label contains the proper dosage - highly recommended to…

Disposal of Out-of-Date Medications

You probably have them in your bathroom or kitchen cabinet. Maybe next to your bed or in a drawer. Medicines that have expired or which you don't take anymore. In the past, people were told to flush them down the toilet. That isn't the answer though because then those medicines get into the ground water and cause other problems.

There are federal guidelines for appropriate… Read More

Dear Aunt Sarah('s Pancake House): Local is not better "by default!"

On the way home from Washington, D.C. recently, my husband began looking at the road signs to see what kinds of fooderies (my word) would be popping up soon, as it was after six and time for dinner. We'd been on the road for a few hours already and still had a few more to go. He was getting cranky from low blood sugar and we were still an hour outside of Richmond.

Long story short, around the bend we saw Aunt Sarah's Pancake House. My husband clapped his hands together. "PANCAKES!…

is your STUFF really part of you?

There are lots of reasons why you may save stuff. One might be the feeling that the item "is part of you". If your space is overflowing with stuff that "is part of you" maybe it is time to re-evaluate. In reality, your arm is part of you, but the item isn't. Your leg is part of you, but the stuff isn't. Consider keeping items that represent the best "part of… Read More

Why Do People Watch "Hoarders"? Part 1

As the popularity of "Hoarders" grows, fans often come up to me in person or comment online about their enthusiasm for their favorite episodes. However, some people - usually those who have never actually seen an episode - ask, "Why is the show so popular since we're just seeing people really struggling with their stuff?"

Without saying it aloud, the implication is that viewers are rubbernecking an accident or that some measure of…

Steve Jobs’ Principles of Success

Jobs…Jobs…Jobs.

Every time I turn on the TV I hear about two things:

(1) Jobs, necessary to overcome the demise of massive unemployment, and

(2) Jobs, as in Steve, the death of the genius behind Apple computers who created thousands of jobs.

Many news broadcasts have characterized Steve Jobs as the Thomas Edison of this… Read More

Reaching your goal was a difficult journey… are you ready to maintain this success?

Getting Your But out of Your Head

This post has been on my "blog about list" for too long, so here it is! :)

We often hear the expression "get your head out of your butt", but I want to talk about getting the "buts" out of your head!

We all have them. I call them "yeah, buts"...

I hear it all the time

  • Yeah, but the economy...
  • Yeah, but I can't...
  • Yeah, but I don't have the money...
  • Yeah, but [so and so] won't support…

The Chamber List

Most salespeople seem to lack direction when it comes to developing a suspect list — and suspects, I hope you’ll remember, are people who you think might be prospects, but they still need to be qualified. I recently spoke with a salesperson who told me that she was gearing up for her annual prospecting effort, because the Chamber of Commerce list would be coming out later in the month. Setting aside the issue that prospecting should be an ongoing activity — not limited to…
