What’s the Buzz?

The two words 'information' and 'communication' are often used interchangeably, but they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through.” ~~Sydney J. Harris

Last week we talked about becoming a subject matter expert and sharing your information—from an audience’s benefit perspective—in a real-time speaking environment. This week we expand more on the basic concept, especially in the… Read More

Generating Sales with a Blog

A lot of people have been asking me a common question recently: "What's the point of a blog?" The answer to that question can vary from business to business. I found one article with some interesting sales-related stats about blogging that might shed some light on the subject.

The article claims that businesses…

30 Days

One day in November of 2005 life changed inside a prisoner's cell. The change took place in his heart and travelled to his head.

When I met Darin, one of the things he shared was how on that change took place.

His life before prison was filled with bad influences, bad decisions, and a big ego. More than anything he said that his big head got him into trouble. Once he was in prison facing a thirteen year sentence, he came face to face with himself and realized that he had to…

Meet Darin - I promised to post a picture, so here it is. William Burton is on the left, Darin is on the right and I'm the middle. I asked and received his permission to post pictures and info. I thought it might help if you could see the person, rather than me just talking about him. This was the picture taken at our meeting earlier this week, when I met him for the first time.…

How The Internet Started

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by

the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name

of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of

leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com.

And she said unto Abraham, her…

Will keep this post short... laptop fried and my desktop computer is dead - writing from customer service laptop at the gym.

During my meeting with Darin yesterday, one of the things that I asked him was to write what he wanted to share with you. Since he has no internet access, he will have to write any thoughts that he would like to share and then give them to his counselor on a given Saturday. His counselor will get the notes to me.

I hope to share that with you in the… Read More

Inbetween a tornado, earthquake & hurricane

September may be disaster preparedness month, but obviously Mother Nature isn't concerned with following the calendar. First, with very little warning, we had a tornado in April. With no warning at all, some people felt the earthquake that hit the East Coast on August 23rd. And Hurricane Irene may or may not hit our area. If not her, then some other hurricane will probably head our way. So are you ready?

I went in the store yesterday and all of the bottled water was gone. Pretty sure… Read More

Wining & Dining

Here’s a question for your strategic consideration: Do you need to entertain prospects and customers in order to gain — or keep — their business?

Ultimately, I think it all depends on your prospects and customers. The simple answer is that if they expect it and require it, you probably have to provide it if you want their business. However, many of the people who make the buying decisions in the modern business world don’t need to be entertained in this way. In fact, many of them…

Organizing Essentials: Required Reading for Professional Organizers

There are so many books about organizing and experts who specialize in it that it can be overwhelming to try to acquire an organizing education without amassing your own public library. His name is Darin. I got the chance to meet him today. When I walked into the restaurant he was already there, accompanied by another gentleman (Gary) who serves as a volunteer counselor. William was also there. There was no armed guard or orange jumpsuits.

I quickly learned that Darin had taught himself MS Publisher as he handed me a mock up of a Helping Hands newsletter he put together. His thought is that publishing a newsletter with interviews and pictures of homeless people,…

Dental Health For Pets

Have you ever noticed your dog or cat's particularly bad breath? Many times, this can be the result of existing dental issues that are getting progressively worse without the proper attention. Dogs and cats usually start forming dental issues at around three years old, and continually get worse with age. Dental

health is extremely important to your pet's…

Yes? Well let's explore how to make them more functional.

  • Crammed full of all sorts of unknown items. Hard to open and close.
  • Barely anything in them because the drawer is too small, too deep, or too…

Tommorrow will be an interesting day. It's when I get to meet this gentleman and get a chance to talk with him. Did you know that Tim Allen (star of TV show, Tool Time) served several years in prison and when he got out, he turned his life around and became a very successful comedian?

Here is an interesting story about another ex convict who turned his life around. There are many such stories. I hope we can help one more success story come true.…

35 Days

I censored my own blog and I want to share a few valuable lessons with you. If you are a media professional then this might be of particular interest.

Earlier I posted a blog under the same title "35 Days". It was supposed to help draw attention and invite participation in helping someone who will be released from prison in just 35 days. You can see the original post "48 Days" if you would like to find out more. My focus for the post "35 Days"  was about the negativity in the media…

When you Post a Blog, Tweet, or Comment online does it matter what words you use?

What do you think? Let's look at this logically.

Say you go to a restaurant for lunch and you love it and want to support this business so it will stay in business. Lets call it Annie's Lunch Place. What do you say?

Had a great lunch over at Annies!

Title Hijacking: What's different about me?

Obviously not the title since I hijacked it...

A good friend of mine, Victor, wrote a wonderful post that invoked a great deal of reflection. Things I've thought about for a while, but gave me the need to put it in words (and hopefully make logical sense).

Let's start with the obvious:

1) I'm young. I'm a learning sponge. Knowledge is power. Aging alone doesn’t… Read More

5 Feng Shui Reasons to Avoid a Restaurant

I was craving a falafel—that Middle Eastern chick pea delight—during a visit with family. My sister found a small locally owned restaurant that promised delicious sandwiches. We had a fairly good meal, yet I won’t be going back. What was off from a Feng Shui perspective?

1. A dirty front door—in Feng Shui, the front door is the “mouth of chi”—the entrance to good luck, opportunity, and in this case, hungry patrons. I didn’t even want to touch the door because it was black with… Read More
