Hi Mitch. I know when I read your blogs, there is always big value. Thank you for your ongoing generosity.

It's definitely revolutionary. It will take a while for most to see the power, but I have no doubt that in just a few years we will be looking back and saying 'kids, we used to use email..." LOL!

About my Business:
Agile Markup Corporation is a consultancy specializing in XML and other markup-based technologies. We can build Web CMS-based sites, documentation publishing toolkits for pushing technical docs and databases to the Web, as well as development Web-based applications and integration of services into your business processes.

What is "markup," you ask? Markup is the wa

Why should you care? Well, markup is to information systems as water is to biology -- a universal solvent, glue, and lubricant. Where most programmers still see IT as programs and databases they create, the reality is that your business relies upon the informational assets managed inside these systems. Getting information between systems is key to implementing efficient, stable work-flows. Unfortunately, tight coupling between systems also causes integrations to be more fragile, and break more often due to upgrades or obsolescent services. Markup lets you get at those assets and to put together working solutions without requiring tight program-to-program coupling... and sometimes without even requiring the original programmers.

Markup is content created to allow efficient reuse, not only to be read by people but also as inputs and outputs of automated, structure-driven processes. Markup is the reason we can have social networking sites, Rich Internet Applications, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), book publishing systems, and a plethora of other information systems, all using the same basic Internet infrastructure.
About Me:
I am an adjuvant -- if you are a writer or designer, I can serve as a database and scripting development resource; diagnose and perform repairs on sites that are down. If you are a manager without a full-time IT staff I can generally find ways to make things work, or work better for you. I'm a fantastic XSLT stylesheet writer and database publishing tool integrator as well.

Recently, I have observed that people would like to use more technology but don't know the right questions to ask. Over and over again, people jump into IT projects without understanding their options, the consequences and costs of taking certain paths to building Web CMS solutions, and a general lack of due diligence in their own requirements planning and proposal process. To address that need, I often consult to act as a coach and a kind of project inspector, helping you understand risks and evaluate the opportunities of going down one of many paths.
My Ideal Customer is:
You have a need to do more than advertising and Web traffic analysis. You've got customers who need Deep Web accessibility. You've got technical documentation, enterprise databases, and interactive applications that should be visible on the Web, but are not. You're a producer who wants to reduce the on-going costs of doing business through automation.

I can accept jobs of all sizes, but would most appreciate and be able to invest time in projects of between $5k to $25k in cost.
I would be happy to entertain consulting relationships to help clients define requirements and exercise diligence, where I am not the developer.

My ideal customer understands the commitment and effort needed for project analysis and design work.
My Ideal Referral Partner is:
A writer or designer who consults. A capable manager who has the resources in-house, just not enough of them; or who has people "not interested" in doing niche data extraction/conversion or Web publishing projects.

Shifting gears... a nicely usable local search tool

Having spent a lot of my time on UNIX-type systems early on, I can tell you one thing that I've missed a LOT on Windows is a usable search tool. Now, I know you can use the Windows Explorer to search for files and folders, but honestly it is way too slow and the user interface gets in the way more than it helps.

Many programmers rely on an integrated development environment - an "IDE" -- to do help organize things. Yet I've found that IDEs fall flat when trying to work with other peoples' code,… Continue

Trade-offs of State Incentives Programs

A Real Estate agent told me about HCL Technologies, an Indian IT services company, moving to Wake County. Turns out to be another case of the Easley administration offering incentives to outside companies in order to "make" jobs in the county.

I only know the details of the agreement published in the Triangle Biz Journal, but recent history does not give any indication that it is anything other… Continue

January Web Design Group Meetup will Rip Apart Web Sites

Members at our December meeting last night broadly agreed on a deepening of the agenda for 2010. First up, we're planning to critique two or three Web sites from a design and usability perspective.

We did this kind of thing before for http://www.gotoaid.com, a venture put together by insider Keval Mehta, and I'm pretty sure he appreciated the feedback. The first site we have up on our list for January is http://wwwContinue

Stumbled upon free "royalty free" classical music site

OK, this isn't for everyone, but apparently finding musical scores for videos is not all that easy if your criteria is that it be both royalty free and free to download. I'm putting together a montage, and wanted to find a piece by Gustav Holst. The client cannot host a video without knowing the licensing terms of everything, so I was looking for royalty free music sites. Oh, and it isn't that there's no budget, but the paperwork would be a real hassle.

After a lot of searching I happened up on… Continue

Google Wave and Email

After using Wave, I believe it is clearly superior to email for mission-critical communications. While the current Google user interface for Wave could use a lot of improvement, the architecture will give it a special edge over most other non-verbal forms of internet communication. Consideration of Sarbanes-Oxley may even cause it to displace email.

In the form of a narrative between Alice and Bob:

Bob (calling Alice): Was my last email clear? I hadn't heard back.

Alice: No, I don't see your… Continue
