Business Development: Walking thru a Minefield?

Have you ever heard of the expression "the best way to walk through a minefield is to follow someone?" Sounds like great advice, doesn't it?

We seem to know this "minefield" concept very well when it comes to self preservation but we seem to miss this thought process when it comes to "business preservation."

Business preservation you say? Yes, when a business has decreased by half and I hear business owners declare it is due to the economy. The economy may have something to do with the business consuming itself but not all of it. Myself included (at times), I see people refusing to get help. The common things I have heard before are; "coaches are too expensive," "it is hard to find a good business coach," "I don't need a coach, I need more business." And the list goes on....

Every time in the past I have spent good money for training, education or consulting it has ALWAYS paid for itself. I don't know why this is a fact I just know every time I have had someone coaching me looking for issues or opportunities I could not necessarily seen my business has grown.

A good business coach will give you information, hope and connections to more business. When I hired my last business coach I was able to; publish a book, get 3 speaking engagements, get interviewed on 2 radio shows, start 2 companies, get published in the newspaper, help me set up my first e-commerce website http://www.forfreeandforfun.com and I am sure I have missed some.

I think Einstein summed it up best, "The problems of today cannot be solved with the same thinking that gave us the problems in the first place." This is what outside help will do... get us thinking beyond the problem to a solution.

I would love to hear some issues people are having right now and maybe together we can come up with a solution. How has having a mentor/business coach helped you in the past?

Great point Chris. I talk (and coach) with a lot of coaches. It's easy for me to see the ones that aren't going to go very far. These coaches think they know everything and never bring others into their companies who can help.

I made this mistake years ago when I started and felt the same way. It wasn't until 12 months into it that I hired a coach. My business skyrocketed as a result!

And I still do this! On Friday I hired a sales coach to work with my entire team. If you ever think you know it all or stop learning, you stop growing. I don't think neutral is an option. You're either going forward or backward.
